Many members of SciExcite were able to participate in Zoo Boo at the Rosamond Gifford Zoo last Saturday, and like last year, it was a huge hit! This year we brought Dry Ice and many other spooky activities and candy to keep all the costumed kids engaged and excited about science!
Last Thursday was SciExcite's first Mad Scientists session of the school year, and we had so much fun with some awesome kids, who helped us make some awesome goo! Because it is a library activity, we start each session with short story; in this case, Emmett read our students Dr. Seuss' Bartholomew and the Oobleck!
We then proceeded to make our own gooey green Oobleck and sticky Gak! The kids had such a fun time getting dirty while learning about some awesome polymerization reactions! We can't wait for next month's Mad Scientists, which may feature Dry Ice! Hope to see you there!
Today was SciExcite's first day at Delaware Elementary, and we absolutely fell in love with the kids that attended our session! We had half an hour to run through a few introductory chemistry experiments, and get them excited for what they would be experiencing for the rest of the year.
Today's experiments were Disappearing Water, Crystal Slime, and Tie-dye Milk! Crystal Slime was the only new experiment we tried, and it was so much fun that we plan to do it whenever we can. It involves making Gak using clear glue instead of white, so the Gak itself is actually clear, and looks really pretty when you add glitter and food coloring. We gave all the kids googly eyes as well so that they could create their very own sparkly slime monster!
Our first day at Delaware was such a huge hit, that we are going to request coming in more than once a month. We want as much time with these kids as possible!
Select members of SciExcite attended the first session of TLC today! The experience was far more fulfilling than any of us had expected, and we are so excited to return next month and learn more about the other organizations participating in the training alongside us, as well learning how to expand our organization to its full potential.
Each group taking the course had the opportunity to build an asset map and present to the classroom, and every individual had such a unique story and purpose, but we all had one thing in common: we want to enrich lives and help people as much as we can.
SciExcite already has new techniques to implement into our own work, including "One-to-One's", which will be extremely useful this week as we interview potential candidates for SciExcite, and even the discussion of Ground Rules during our meeting.
Next month, we will have the opportunity to ride a bus through our community as each group shows us where they are from, and what portions of the area are important in their project. We are honestly so excited to keep learning with this group of individuals. Everyone was so warm and welcoming and interested in what we were doing, and it was a wonderfully rewarding experience!
SciExcite is extremely proud to announce that select members of our organization will be attending the American Chemical Society's Northeast Regional Conference!
Five of our members worked together to submit two abstracts to the committee, and they were selected for presentation at the conference, which will be taking place this weekend in Binghamton.
We are so excited to be given this opportunity, and would like to thank ACS for providing us the means to spread our ideas, explore other fascinating presentations, and for the generous travel and hotel accommodations! We can't wait!
